The Maids

The Maids featured a stellar cast of Daniel Frederiksen, Dion Mills and Luke Mullins, a floor stencilled as a giant doily and a bucket-load of rubber gloves (designed by Danielle Hastie). Whether Genet genuinely intended the parts to be played by men or not (this is much debated), I wanted to go in that direction and explore what that would do in relation to the layers of performance, play and performativity. The play revolves around the obsessive existence of two maids who live through their mistress and I hoped to draw the audience into a world where where this obsession collides with reality and fantasy.
